Analytics for Newsletters and Creators

Newsletters and creators need analytics that ties traffic to paid subscribers, not pageviews. Here's what actually matters and how to measure it.

newsletters.

The short version

  • Newsletters and creators need to know which content or campaign converts readers into paying subscribers, not just which posts got traffic.
  • Conclick ties traffic sources to revenue from Stripe, Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, Polar, or Dodo, shows where your upgrade funnel breaks, and flags the content that earns money.
  • Setup takes about two minutes; in most cases no cookie banner is required.

Analytics tools kept congratulating me on "engagement" while my revenue sat perfectly flat, and resolving that contradiction is what Conclick was built for. Newsletters and creators are a specific kind of business: you live and die by conversion rates, not impressions. The metric that matters is simple: which piece of content, which referral, which email sequence turns a free reader into someone who pays you.

What Kind of Business Newsletters and Creators Actually Run

Newsletter operators and independent creators are running subscription or digital product businesses, often with tiny teams. Their revenue model usually looks like one of three things: a paid newsletter tier (Substack, Ghost, Beehiiv), a course or cohort, or a collection of digital products sold through Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy, or Stripe. Sometimes all three at once. What they share is a funnel that starts with content (a post, a video, a thread) and ends with someone handing over a credit card.

The challenge is attribution. A reader might find a free article through Google, subscribe to the free tier, sit on your list for three weeks, then buy the paid plan after clicking a link in issue 14. Generic analytics sees a direct visit and a conversion. You need to see the whole chain.

The Metrics That Actually Matter for Creators

Most analytics dashboards were built for e-commerce stores or enterprise marketing teams. They track the wrong things for creator businesses. Here is what actually drives decisions:

  • Revenue per traffic source: which referrer, search term, or campaign is generating paying subscribers, not just visitors
  • Upgrade funnel drop-off: at exactly which step are free readers bouncing before they hit your pricing page or checkout
  • Content-to-revenue attribution: which posts or landing pages are responsible for the most paid conversions
  • Scroll depth on key pages: are readers actually finishing the post that's supposed to sell them on the paid tier
  • Goal completions with dollar values: email signups, free trial starts, checkout page visits, each with an assigned revenue weight

Pageviews and sessions are not useless, but they are not the number to optimize. A piece that gets 200 visits and converts 12 of them into paying subscribers is worth more than one that gets 2,000 visits and converts zero.

The Mistakes Creators Make with Generic Analytics

The most common mistake I see is optimizing for traffic that does not convert. Google Analytics shows you a post getting 5,000 visits a month from search. It looks like a win. But if none of those visitors ever hit your pricing page, that traffic is worth nothing to your business. Without revenue attribution, you cannot know.

The second mistake is ignoring the upgrade funnel. Most creator businesses have a clear path: free content, email opt-in, nurture sequence, upgrade offer. But creators rarely instrument the middle steps. They know their subscriber count and their MRR, but they have no idea where in that funnel they are losing people. If 60% of readers who land on your pricing page never scroll far enough to see the buy button, that is a layout problem you would catch immediately with scroll depth data. Most creators never know.

The third mistake is trusting last-click attribution. A reader finds you on Twitter, reads a free post, does not sign up, comes back a week later via a Google search for your name, and then subscribes. Last-click attribution gives all the credit to branded search. The Twitter post that started the chain gets nothing. You stop writing Twitter threads. That is a real cost.

The most expensive analytics mistake for creators is not missing data. It is acting on wrong data. Optimizing for traffic that does not convert, or cutting a channel that was starting the purchase journey, costs real revenue. Attribution that shows you the full chain is not a nice-to-have.

How Conclick Fits a Newsletter or Creator Business

Revenue Attribution: Which Content Is Actually Earning

Conclick connects directly to whichever of Stripe, Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, Polar, or Dodo you use, and ties every payment back to the traffic source, campaign, and funnel that produced it. If you sell a writing course through Stripe and run traffic from Substack recommendations, Google, and a guest post on another newsletter, Conclick shows you the revenue breakdown per source. Not just clicks. Actual dollars.

You can also assign a revenue value to soft goals. An email opt-in might be worth $4 to you based on your historical conversion rate from subscriber to paid customer. Set that as a goal value and Conclick starts treating your free opt-in form as a revenue event. Now you can compare landing pages not by conversion rate alone, but by revenue generated.

Auto-Detected Funnels: Find the Biggest Leak

Conclick's funnels are auto-detected: it watches your visitor paths and surfaces the single biggest drop-off point automatically, along with an estimate of the revenue being lost there. For a newsletter business, that might be the gap between the free article and the email opt-in form, or between the pricing page and the checkout page. You do not have to configure a funnel manually. The tool finds where you are bleeding and tells you what it is costing you.

Real-Screenshot Heatmaps: Fix Pages That Are Not Converting

The heatmap feature uses real screenshots of your actual pages, not a generic wireframe. Click maps, scroll depth, rage clicks (people clicking something that is not clickable), and dead clicks (people clicking something that looks interactive but does nothing) all show up. For creators, the most useful application is the sales or upgrade page. If the buy button is below where 80% of readers stop scrolling, that is an immediate fix. If people are rage-clicking on your pricing table, something is confusing them.

Daily Digest: Know When Something Is Working

Conclick sends a daily digest by email, Slack, Discord, or Telegram. It is not a raw data dump; it highlights spikes, milestones, and anomalies. If a post goes viral overnight, you know by morning. If a referral source suddenly starts driving paid conversions, it shows up. For solo creators who are not logging into dashboards every day, this is the signal-to-noise filter that actually makes data useful.

Privacy: No Cookie Banner Required

Conclick is cookieless, GDPR and CCPA-friendly, and in most cases you do not need a consent banner at all. For newsletter operators who care about reader trust, that matters. The tracking script is also lightweight; it will not slow down your pages or fire a pile of third-party requests that spook privacy-conscious readers.

Where Conclick Is Not the Right Tool

To be honest: Conclick does not have email-level analytics. It cannot tell you which specific issue of your newsletter drove a conversion; that requires UTM parameters in your email links and a deliberate tagging strategy on your end. If you want deep email sequence attribution (open rate, click rate, heatmaps inside the email), you need a dedicated email analytics tool for that layer. Conclick handles the web side of the funnel once someone lands on your site.

Conclick also does not do cohort retention analysis or subscriber lifetime value modeling. If your business is mature enough to need that, you probably already have a data warehouse. Conclick is built for the stage before that, when you need to know which traffic converts and where your funnel leaks, without a data team.

Setup Takes Two Minutes

Add the Conclick script to your site. Connect your payment processor. Set up one or two goals: an email opt-in, a checkout page visit. That is the core setup. If you use Google Search Console, Conclick imports that data so you can see which search queries are driving paying subscribers, not just clicks. GA4 import is also available if you have historical data you want to bring in.

The 14-day trial requires no credit card. Pricing starts at $9 per month, or $7 per month billed annually. There is also a one-time lifetime deal for people who prefer to avoid subscriptions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can Conclick track which newsletter issue drove a paid conversion?

Not automatically. Conclick works on the web side of the funnel, not inside email clients. To track newsletter-driven conversions, you need to add UTM parameters to the links in your emails (e.g., utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=issue-42). Once a reader clicks through with those UTM tags, Conclick picks them up and ties any subsequent payment back to that source. It takes about five minutes to set up UTM links in your email tool.

Does Conclick work with Ghost or Substack?

Conclick works with any site where you can add a script tag. Ghost supports custom code injection natively. Substack has limited support for custom scripts: you can add code to the header via Settings > Design, though Substack's restrictions mean you may not get the full tracking scope. Ghost users get full functionality. If you run a custom domain with Ghost, you also get the full heatmap and funnel features.

What payment processors does Conclick connect to?

Stripe, Paddle, Polar, Lemon Squeezy, and Dodo. If you sell a course or digital product through any of these processors, Conclick can pull payment events and attribute them to the traffic sources and campaigns that drove them. The connection is read-only: Conclick sees transaction data but cannot initiate charges or modify anything in your payment account.

Is Conclick GDPR-compliant for European readers?

Yes. Conclick is cookieless and does not track individual users across sessions in the way that triggers GDPR consent requirements. In most implementations, you do not need a cookie consent banner at all. That said, every business's legal situation is different, and if you have specific compliance concerns you should confirm with your own legal counsel. The general position is that cookieless aggregate analytics falls outside the scope of consent-required tracking under GDPR.

How is Conclick different from Google Analytics for a creator business?

Google Analytics gives you traffic data but requires significant configuration to connect that traffic to revenue, and even then the data model is complex to work with for solo operators. Conclick is built around the question 'which traffic made me money' rather than 'how many sessions did I have.' The revenue attribution, auto-detected funnels, and real-screenshot heatmaps are things GA4, per their docs as of July 2026, either does not have or requires substantial setup and a Google Ads account to approximate. GA4 is also not cookieless by default, so it typically requires a consent banner.

Do I need a developer to set up Conclick?

No. The setup is a single script tag added to your site's header, which on most platforms (Ghost, WordPress, Webflow, Framer, Squarespace) takes under two minutes through the platform's settings UI. Connecting a payment processor requires entering your API keys in Conclick's dashboard. Setting up goals and funnels is done through the Conclick UI; no code changes are needed for basic goal tracking.
