The short version

A funnel and a click map answer two different questions, and most people bouncing between them are really asking one: my checkout is leaking, so what do I change. The funnel points at the step. The map points at the reason. I run both on Conclick every week, and I have watched founders rebuild a page the funnel never accused, because they read a drop number as a verdict when it was only an address. Here is how I keep the two straight, and when I reach for each.
The short version
A funnel measures a sequence: how many people got from step one to step two to step three, and where the biggest fall happens. It tells you which step loses the most people, in what quantity, and often what that leak cost you in revenue. It is a picture of drop-off across pages. What it cannot tell you is what happened on any single one of those pages. It sees the door people failed to walk through, never the room they were standing in when they gave up.
A click map works at the opposite scale. It ignores the whole journey and stares at one page: where people clicked, how far down they scrolled, what they tried to interact with and got nothing back from. It answers why a page underperforms. Put bluntly, the funnel finds the page, the map explains the pixel. Neither is a substitute for the other, and treating one as if it did the other's job is the most common analytics mistake I see.
What a funnel is actually measuring
A conversion funnel is a defined series of steps toward a goal, with the count of people who reach each step. Land on pricing, start checkout, enter payment, confirm. Funnel analysis measures the drop between each step so you can see which one is bleeding the most people, and most funnels leak the bulk of their traffic at just one or two steps rather than evenly. That is the funnel's superpower: it does not just say conversion fell, it tells you exactly which step to go and look at.
What it is good at:
- Locating the single worst step in a multi-page flow, so you stop guessing which page to work on.
- Quantifying the leak: not just that a step is weak, but how many people and how much revenue you lose there.
- Comparing segments, so you can see that mobile checkout drops twice as hard as desktop, or that paid traffic converts but organic stalls at step two.
- Watching a fix land: rerun the same funnel after a change and the number moves or it doesn't.
What it is blind to is everything that happens inside a step. The funnel knows 400 people reached your pricing page and 90 started checkout. It has no idea that 200 of them never scrolled far enough to see the plan they wanted, or that 40 rage-clicked a testimonial logo they thought was a link. The drop-off number is a symptom with the cause stripped out. You cannot diagnose a page from the fact that people left it.
What a click map adds that the funnel can't see
A click map is one page under a microscope. Instead of counting exits, it records behaviour on the page itself, and that behaviour is where the reason lives. Three things it shows that no funnel can:
- Click distribution: what people actually reach for. If most clicks land on a non-clickable heading and almost none on your real call to action, your visual hierarchy is lying to people about what is interactive.
- Scroll depth: how far down the page people get before they leave. A scroll map that dies at 40 percent means your pricing table, sitting at 70 percent, is a page most visitors never saw. The funnel just recorded a drop and blamed the page. The scroll map tells you they never reached the part you were worried about.
- Frustration signals: rage clicks and dead clicks. A rage click is a rapid burst of clicks on the same spot, the classic tell of a frustrated user hitting something that will not respond. A dead click is a click on an element that looks interactive but does nothing. Both are invisible to a funnel and both point straight at a fix.
This is the part that changes how you work. A funnel gives you a suspect. A click map gives you a motive. When I see a step leaking in the funnel, the click map on that exact page usually turns a shrug into an obvious next move: the button is below the fold, the field that makes people bail is the phone number, the thing everyone clicks is decorative. None of that is derivable from a drop-off percentage, no matter how long you stare at it.
The funnel is the smoke alarm. The click map is walking into the room to see what is on fire.
When to reach for each
You do not open both at once and hope. There is an order, and getting it right saves you weeks. Start with the funnel when you have a multi-step flow and you do not yet know where it hurts. Start with the click map when you already know the page and you want to know what to change on it.
- Reach for the funnel when the question is which page. Onboarding, checkout, a lead form, any sequence where people can drop at several points and you need to find the leak before you touch anything.
- Reach for the click map when the question is what on this page. A landing page with a bad conversion rate, a pricing page you suspect nobody scrolls, a form that people start and abandon.
- Reach for both, in sequence, when the flow is leaking and you want to fix it rather than admire the problem. The funnel names the step. You open the click map for that one page. You change the thing the map shows you. You rerun the funnel to confirm.
- Skip the funnel entirely for a single standalone page. If there is no sequence, there is nothing for a funnel to measure. A click map and a scroll map are the whole toolkit for a one-page site or a single landing page.
The failure mode I watch founders fall into is starting with the map. They feel productive staring at a heatmap of their homepage, tweaking button colours, when the funnel would have told them the homepage was fine and the real leak was three steps deeper on a page they never looked at. Find the step first. Then, and only then, zoom in.
The workflow that uses both together
The reason I built Conclick with funnels and click maps in the same product is that the handoff between them is the whole game, and gluing two separate tools together at that seam is miserable. I am not pretending this pairing is unique to us. The serious behaviour tools have understood for years that where and why are two halves of one job. Hotjar, now part of Contentsquare, sells funnels alongside heatmaps and recordings and explicitly frames it as seeing where, when and why users drop off. The open-source Umami engine that Conclick is built on shipped its own heatmaps in version 3.2.0 to sit next to its funnel reports. If a tool gives you drop-off numbers but no way to look at the page behind a bad step, you are going to end up owning two subscriptions and copying step names between them by hand.
Where Conclick differs is the layer underneath: it ties the funnel and the click map to money and to cohorts. I can render a click map of just the people who abandoned checkout, or just the visitors who later paid, and compare how the two groups used the same page. A funnel tells me a step lost 300 people. A cohort click map tells me the 300 who left behaved differently from the 90 who stayed, and where. That is as close as behaviour analytics gets to a straight answer.
Where the click map still lies to you
A click map is not truth, it is a summary, and summaries hide things. It flattens every visitor into one overlay, so a page that works perfectly for buyers and terribly for everyone else looks like an average of the two and reads as mildly fine. That is exactly why cohort filtering matters: the aggregate map is the one most likely to mislead you. It also cannot tell you intent. A cluster of clicks might be interest or might be confusion, and only a scroll map, a recording, or a plain conversation with a user settles which.
So I hold both loosely. The funnel is the more trustworthy number because it is a count of real outcomes, not an interpretation. The click map is the richer story but the easier one to read your own assumptions into. Use the funnel to decide what is worth investigating and to check whether a change worked. Use the click map to generate the hypothesis in between. Anyone selling you either one as the complete answer is selling, not analysing.
